About Lymphedema Treatment

There are two main types of lymphedema, primary and secondary.

Primary Lymphedema is caused by congenital malformation of the lymphatic vessels or nodes which can present itself at any moment usually from birth or shortly after puberty.

Secondary Lymphedema is the result of damage to lymphatic vessels or nodes. This commonly occurs as a result of post- operative treatments; in particular cancer treatment, where lymph nodes may have been removed for example in cases of breast cancer to prevent spreading further.

Treating Lymphedema

There is currently no cure for treating later stages of Lymphedema but with regular treatment it can be maintained at a comfortable level.

Combined Decongestive Therapy involves the use of bandaging, skin care, Manual Lymph Drainage and therapeutic exercises.
